This piece began as an equilateral triangular grid.  Randomly selected triangles were deleted and replaced with a triad of new edges.  The resulting open areas were colored in randomly, using six colors.

This method for altering the topology of a triangular network is discussed in one of my publications in Biophysical Journal, "Influence of Network Topology on the Elasticity of the Red Blood Cell Membrane Skeleton."
