Closed Quadrilateral Lattice
Acrylic on canvas
30" h x 40" w
March 1998
This piece was painted in phases. First, the horizontal and vertical stripes were masked off and painted with various colors of orange, yellow, and green. Forty-five degree angles were added at the intersections to suggest depth, but they do not point in a consistent direction. Later, the square regions in between were painted with various colors of red, blue, and purple.
The design has left-right symmetry, but the top and bottom halves have different arrangements of red and blue tiles. The preferred orientation that is shown, with more red at the bottom, is suggestive of a smiley face.
