Soft Window 1
Fabric overlay with embedded animated RGB LED pixels
Custom control hardware and software
24" x 24" x 3" thick
2023
This work uses RGB LED pixels to create vibrant animated light patterns behind a fabric panel with a grid of squares. Light shines through a white velvet fabric with small holographic polka dots that block some of the internal lighting while also reflecting some external lighting (if present). A layer of polyester behind the fabric adds thickness while also diffusing the internal lighting.
The square grid is created with a combination of stitching and cording wrapped around the piece, and intersections in the grid are adorned with clear beads. The entire assembly is attached to a stretched canvas base to facilitate hanging it on a wall.
The name of the piece is inspired by its resemblance to a grid of window panes, particularly when it is running a cloud-like blue and white pattern. Unlike glass windows, each of these "panes" is soft and puffy.
When it is first powered up, the piece will run a repeating sequence that cycles through a list of six modes, some of which are sound reactive. It can also be set to run a single pattern continuously, using the built-in mode switch on the back panel or with the Enlighted iOS BLE App.

The video below demonstrates the animated effects in a room with moderate lighting, and in a dark room.
